From TV News to New Beginnings: John Anderson’s Journey of Reinvention
From a boy in the Midwest practicing play-by-play commentary to a seasoned media professional with 37 years in TV news, John Anderson’s story is one of passion, dedication, and transformation. Now the owner of John Anderson Communications, Anderson has turned his extensive media expertise toward helping businesses amplify their stories and grow their reach. His remarkable journey, rich with life lessons, exemplifies resilience, creativity, and community spirit.
A Childhood Rooted in Imagination and Sports
Growing up in a loving Midwestern family, John Anderson’s early years were filled with sports, storytelling, and imagination. With an older brother and sister and supportive parents, his household was one where dreams were encouraged. He recalls, “My mom always told me, ‘Never lose your imagination and keep dreaming.’ That was our house in a nutshell.”
His father kindled his love of sports, but it was his mother who planted the seed for storytelling. From an early age, Anderson found himself fascinated not by playing sports but by narrating them. He would mute the television, calling the plays for Minnesota Twins games, imitating his favorite announcers. “I’d turn down the sound and do the play-by-play because I knew all the players,” Anderson reminisces, crediting his mother for encouraging this budding passion. “She’d tell me, ‘John, the Twins game is on, go practice,’ and that’s where my early love for broadcasting came from.”
A Front-Row Seat to History
John Anderson’s career in television journalism placed him at the epicenter of some of the most significant moments in modern history. His experience in covering monumental events like the Clinton impeachment hearings, major sports championships, and most notably, the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001, gave him a rare and profound perspective. These moments didn’t just shape his career—they shaped his worldview.
Among all these pivotal events, 9/11 stands out as the most impactful and challenging. Anderson reflects on that day with a deep sense of responsibility and emotion. “I was on air for eight or nine hours straight” he recalls, the day's urgency still vivid in his memory. “At the time, you’re focused on delivering the facts, getting accurate information out to the public. But once I walked off the set, the enormity of what had just happened hit me.” The shift from professional duty to personal reflection was overwhelming, he felt full of fear of what was to come for our great nation, where were we to go from here.
Anderson describes the moment when the emotional weight of the day settled on him, a quiet realization that came not in the newsroom but on his drive home. “I was driving through a neighborhood, and I saw a father and son playing catch in their yard. It was such a simple, everyday scene, but at that moment, it was powerful. It made me think, ‘This is America. This is who we are. We will rise above this.’ That image stuck with me—without it, I don’t know how I would have processed the day.”
The emotional weight of that day and countless others defined his career, but his advisor at UW-Eau Claire, Professor Henry Lippold, had prepared him for moments like this. Lippold, a mentor and idol for Anderson, offered him advice that would shape his approach to journalism: “Use the profession to help others.” This advice became the foundation for Anderson’s career and later his media consulting business.
After 37 years in TV news, John Anderson felt the pull to make a difference in a new way. Inspired by his TV segment Saving Mainstreet, which highlighted struggling businesses in need of community support during the Covid pandemic, he realized how many small businesses lacked the media exposure necessary to thrive. “I saw firsthand how media attention could be a game-changer, and I knew I could help,” Anderson reflects.
In 2024, he launched John Anderson Communications, with a focus on helping businesses, as well as nonprofits, amplify their stories. Through his company, Anderson applies the same values he championed in journalism—authenticity, empathy, and purpose—to his media consulting work. “Whether covering an election or helping a business, it’s all about real stories and real connections,” Anderson notes. The lessons he learned in his journalism career are the foundation of his approach to consulting, and seeing a business thrive through media attention brings him great joy. “When I see their phones start ringing after a successful media placement, that’s my greatest satisfaction.”
He fondly recalls one of his first clients excitedly exclaiming, “I’m a TV star now!” after gaining media coverage, a moment that reaffirmed his decision to make the career change.
Challenges and Triumphs in Transition
Transitioning to entrepreneurship wasn’t without its challenges. “Starting a business at 58 was both thrilling and terrifying,” Anderson admits. He describes the experience as navigating a vast ocean of uncertainty, where each wave of doubt and fear threatened to pull him under. Yet, amidst these tumultuous waters, his wife’s unwavering support was his anchor. “She’s been behind me from day one,” Anderson reflects. “Her encouragement and belief in my vision gave me the confidence to take the leap, even when the path seemed unclear.”
To bridge the gap between his journalism career and his new venture, Anderson tapped into his network of former colleagues and business professionals. He spent countless mornings over coffee, absorbing wisdom from experts in PR and marketing, and gaining practical insights into the world of business. “I didn’t know anything about running a business,” he says. “But those conversations felt like attending an intensive course on entrepreneurship.” Each meeting was a stepping stone, gradually building his understanding and fortifying his resolve.
His advice to others contemplating a late-career shift is both practical and inspiring: “Go for it. Plan well, build a strong network, and don’t be afraid to fail.” Anderson’s journey underscores the importance of perseverance, continuous learning, and the power of a supportive community in turning dreams into reality
Giving Back to the Community
Throughout his career, Anderson has woven a rich tapestry of community service, driven by a deep-seated commitment to giving back—a value ingrained in him from a young age. His dedication is evident in his influential roles, including his work on the board of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and his spirited participation in the VeloSano bike ride for cancer research. Each of these endeavors reflects his determination to leverage his platform and resources for the greater good.
Anderson's connection to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is profoundly personal. His father’s courageous battle with multiple myeloma ignited Anderson's resolve to fight against cancer. To honor his father’s memory, Anderson has engaged in numerous charity rides, navigating the breathtaking yet demanding routes across Lake Tahoe and from Seattle to Portland. “It was my way to honor my dad and fight against the disease that took him,” Anderson reflects, underscoring the deep emotional drive behind his efforts.
In addition to these personal rides, Anderson has made a significant impact through Cleveland Clinic’s VeloSano initiative. During the first five years of John’s involvement, VeloSano raised over $17 million for cancer research, with the event's vibrant atmosphere symbolizing a collective hope and determination. The funds raised have catalyzed advancements in cancer treatments, highlighting Anderson’s ability to transform personal loss into a powerful force for positive change. Through his tireless efforts, Anderson continues to make a substantial difference, leaving an indelible mark of compassion on the community.
Supporting Nonprofits
Now, through John Anderson Communications, Anderson continues to give back, working with nonprofits to amplify their messages. One organization he’s particularly proud of supporting is the Invisible Wounds Project, which provides mental health support for veterans, first responders, and medical professionals suffering from PTSD. Founded by Russ Hanes, a former police officer and first responder, the Invisible Wounds Project offers vital services to those battling trauma, ensuring no one has to face these challenges alone. “This cause is close to my heart,” Anderson says. “Supporting organizations like this feels like an extension of the work I’ve always wanted to do—helping people in need get the support they deserve.” The organization's annual fundraiser, Freedom Fest, on September 28, which helped raise funds for their services, features a 5K run, car show, and a country music concert. While it's too late to join this year, be sure to mark it in your 2025 calendar!
In addition, Anderson also works with Katie Thune, founder of Mad Hatter Wellness, who left her 12-year teaching career with St. Paul Public Schools to advocate for people with disabilities. Katie developed a health and wellness curriculum for students with disabilities, addressing complex topics such as sex education. Her curriculum is now being used not only in Minnesota schools but also in Hawaii, Canada, and Belgium. Anderson proudly helps amplify her work, knowing the powerful impact it has on those it serves.
